Rosa Caterina - SPAIN
“I studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona, where I developed an interest in the transformative nature of organic matter, working with wild plants, wool felt, wax, and paper. In 2013, I studied natural dyes under Michel Garcia in France and Belgium, reconnecting with plant knowledge once passed down through the women in my family and learning about Mediterranean flora. This led me to pursue a PhD in Plant Biology at the University of the Balearic Islands, focusing on local dye plants and their colour grammar.
My painting and textile practice is rooted in this intersection of artistic and botanical research. I work with simple materials and everyday references, often inspired by popular culture and ancient iconography. I'm particularly interested in the image as something ghostlike and magical, which becomes especially vivid when working with mordants — colourless, faintly shadowed paintings that reveal themselves when exposed to plant extracts and heat. I end up encoding the decaying and the ordinary through colour, in ways that hold meaning for me while also speaking to the human condition.
Since 2016, I have lectured at the University of the Balearic Islands, leading workshops and seminars on dye plants. I have also collaborated with institutions such as the Joan March Foundation Museum (Spain), GRETA CDMA (France), and the Museum of Industry, Labor, and Textile (Belgium). Currently, I am a lead professor in painting in the Bachelor of Fine Arts programme at EUA-UIB.”
