“Alvaro Catalán de Ocón (Madrid, 1975) is a designer known for the captivating aesthetics, simplicity, and functionality of his designs, which blend straightforwardness and social commitment. After receiving education and training at the Istituto Europeodi Design in Milan and the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, he established his studio in Barcelona in 2004, which notably produced the “La Flaca” lamp, which won an award in the Frankfurt Light+Building fair.
He moved his studio to Madrid in 2009 and has since been recognized with several more awards, including the Design Report Award in Milan. His PET Lamp project, launched in 2012 and co-created with Enrique Romero de la Llana and Sebastián Betanzo, has gained global recognition, with collections in various countries, numerous awards, and nominations.
His works form part of the collections of the Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), Victoria and Albert Museum (London, United Kingdom), National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne, Australia), Denver Art Museum (Denver, United States), Centre National des Arts Plastiques (Paris, France), M+ West Kowloon Museum (Hong Kong), MAK Design Lab (Vienna, Austria), among others.
In 2023, Alvaro Catalán de Ocón was awarded the National Design Award by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, recognizing his global influence and his focus on sustainability and cultural diversity. In the same year, his studio also receivedthe MINI Design Award for “Enabling the Outdoors/Naturalizing the City,” highlighting its dedication to urban sustainability andmaterial innovation.”
