 Creating your own perfume

June 13th and 17th

If one of the senses had to be chosen to define Mallorca, it would be the sense of smell. The island has its own powerful notes and a history that has been woven through them mixing water and earth.

A seasoned perfumer will lead this experience where participants will be exposed to the basic concepts of perfumery while introduced to a palette of 20 aromas most of them from the Island. Each participant will work on an inspiration route as a guide for the development of their own formula. Finally, once the inspiration has been translated into aromas, they would do the formulation work by mixing the aromas themselves. At the end of the workshop they would have a personalized perfume in a 7 ml roll-on format.

This is a hands-on sensual journey in beautiful dialogue with the olfactory palette of magic Mallorca.

-Healthy bites

-Personalized formula

 Heritage Mediterranean Food

June 14th

They say the way to one´s heart is through the belly and it couldn’t be more so in Mallorca as the mediterranean’s relationship with food plays a large part in defining family roles, rules, and traditions.

Food in most cultures is not merely a way to nourish your body but what we eat, how we cook and who we share our meals with gives us a much deeper understanding of the local culture and can even unravel its history and heritage.

“Let us honor our relationship with the earth through the food we eat. Let us be aware of its origin, let us cultivate the food culture of a territory and its traditional knowledge. Let us respect the ancient landscapes of local commensality. Let's sit down to share and enjoy".

This experience starts at Mercado el Olivar, a traditional Mediterranean market, and follows Deborah Piña, a majorcan with a french mother who has researched in depth the ethnographic and emotional component of the Mediterranean table. Her personal and professional purpose is to create unique experiences and activities, conveyed through food and traditions with the purpose of connecting with our culinary heritage and, above all, enjoying it.

We will be guided by her through her favorite stops and secrets: the best bread in town, the must have olive oil, and the very Mallorcan “tap de corti” made from peppers from the Island, among other delicasies that only a sybarite like her would know where to get. Deborah´s atelier is an old bakery from the XVIII called Forn de la Llotgeta, a place full of character in the Center of Palma.

Once there, the group will stand around the table where tasks will be assigned as Deborah explains each preparation, its heritage, evolution and steps to make it. This will happen around a tasting appetizer of Mallorcan delicacies and wines. Then the group will enjoy a delicious 3 course lunch.

 Woven Memories

June 15th

One of the reasons why XTANT chose Mallorca as the annual appointment for  the heritage textile festival are the telares de llengues, a textile tradition unique to the island that still survives.

This  distinctive textile follows the ancient technique of oriental ikat: a composition by hand of reserve-dyed threads, using a slow and precise procedure that requires both skill and patience.

The textile industry, which in Mallorca employed thousands of workers and had hundreds of workshops, began, from the sixties, a slow decline. Today, there are four textile workshops that manufacture “Telar de Llengues” in Mallorca: Teixits Riera in Lloseta, Teixits Vicens in Pollença, Artesanía Textil Bujosa in Santa Maria and José Cañameras in Establiments, which continue a centuries-old artisanal tradition whose secrets have been transmitted from generation to generation.

This experience is an intimate invitation to two of these surving ateliers, their secrets and their histories told by the creators themselves.

Includes:

The Alchemist´s Journey

June 18th

This is one of those once in a lifetime  experiences, an invitation to explore all the nuances of myrtle, a sacred Mediterranean plant of love and beauty.

Juan Canàves, master artisan herbalist and distiller, and Deborah Piña, cook and communicator, specialized in Mediterranean popular culture, invite you to a magical encounter with Mercedes López in her Moscari lair to honor the Myrtle, the sacred Mediterranean plant of love and beauty.

The distillation process is an opportunity to discover the paths of nature, feel its links and remember its mysterious language.

On this ceremonial journey, participants will walk the path of the alchemists to learn the steps of artisan distillation, experiencing together the path of the woman collector and the techniques of the ancient distillers. Next to the alembic, they will observe the miracle of transformation, accompanying our sisters, the plants, on the alchemical journey.

Throughout the day, they will take various plant-based preparations to enjoy and connect with the experience on different sensory levels. Different dynamics will also be carried out to direct the experience towards a real connection with nature.

Lunch will pay homage not only to Myrtle but to the essential herbs and sacred ingredients that make up the Mallorcan and Mediterranean food landscape.

 Distilling the Mediterranean

June 19th

Herbal spirits following family recipes is one of the ways to distill the Mediterranean essence. This experience is a hands-on  journey weaving herbs and alchemy.

Son Viscos is an old Mallorcan country house now converted into a cozy Bed & Breakfast with a true Mediterranean essence at the foot of the Sierra de Tramontana. The beautiful traditional garden will be the scenario for this experience.

Majorcan with a French mother, Deborah Piña has always been fascinated by the ethnographic and emotional component of the Mediterranean table. As a gastronomic communicator, her personal and professional purpose is to create unique experiences and activities, conveyed through food and traditions with the purpose of connecting with our culinary heritage and, above all, enjoying it.

Throughout the Mediterranean, spirits have been produced by macerating various herbs, spices and barks. Majorca is no exception. There is evidence of the artisanal and domestic production of alcoholic liquor from the 18th century. The Majorcan herbs are made with a base of anise liqueur with flavoring extracts from different plants. “We will prepare it in the most traditional way with herbs such as rosemary, mint, lemon leaves, lemon verbena and others less common in commercial preparations such as pine, bush, myrtle or fennel and all those that we can collect during our walk to capture the essence of Mallorca in a bottle.”

Includes:

-Pick up and drop off from a central location in Palma (TBA)

- Ingredients, materials and recipe

- Herb tasting

- Discover the properties of wild herbs and other ingredients - Practical and participatory workshop.

- Each participant takes home their own liquor

- Wild snack + natural drink for closing

 Tea in the Patio

June 20th

This experience was born from a conversation and an obsession. A conversation with Tomeu Arbona from Fornet de la Soca, a project of local gastronomic archaeology, who told XTANT  about the book “The Wonderful Perfumes”, written by a lady from Mallorca as a diary of the senses materialized in traditional Mediterranean recipes.  In the conversation, we were trying to envision a hidden place to take our guests on a journey of daily life in a house in Mallorca and then we realized that we both shared the obsession with Arquinesia, the newly opened perfume store in the center of Palma and one of the most beautiful boutiques in the world.

Romana Durisch, Arquinesia´s founder, agreed to host us for an afternoon tea prepared by Tomeu Arbona and served in the beautiful patio amidst wild greenery and patinas of many layers. Encarna Soler, a seasoned Spanish ceramic artists will present her chawans in sync with Veronica Hegar from Tesuko who will curate a selection of delicious summer teas and essences.

As the French novelist Marcel Proust discovered when he dunked a cupcake in a cup of tea (in his book In Search of Lost Time, 1927), aromas can bring us more vivid memories than any other sense. And although the literary work documented the author’s epiphany, it is neurologically proven that smell is our most nostalgic sense. Mallorca is full of aromas from the earth, sea, almond blossoms, olive trees…this is an afternoon to bathe in this uniqueness and beauty with the five senses."

-Tea

-Natural Wine
