Stitching with Earth’s Sacred Offerings
Stitching with Earth’s Sacred Offerings by Katerina Knight
“At my local Buddhist temple together we sit and chant the soothing mantra of the Medicine Buddha. Tadyatha Om Bhekhandze Bhekandze Maha Bhekandze Radza Samudgate Soha, we repeat the mantra and in the repetition of words we create a soothing collective energy of loving kindness toward ourselves, each other, and our Earth. The Medicine Buddah, historically, is often depicted in art and writing surrounded by healing plants.”
Taking inspiration from this sacred activity - Stitching with Earth’s Sacred Offerings is a hand embroidery workshop where Katerina will invite participants to learn the rhythm and repetition of hand embroidery using dried plant materials as embroidery embellishments. When we sit together and practice, slow mindful stitching with materials from nature we can find the path to personal and collective healing, whilst offering gratitude for the beautiful offerings the earth gifts us.
In this workshop Katerina participants will learn how to stitch with new and unusual embellishments such as lavender seeds, cornflowers, dahlia petals and rosemary. Each participant, guided by Katerina, will create their own embroidery sampler.
A varied selection of dried plant material will be provided by Katerina. Materials have been homegrown or sustainably foraged from her local surroundings in the Malvern hills. You are welcome to bring your own natural plant materials you might wish to explore.
No prior experience of hand embroidery techniques is required.
All fabrics, threads and embroidery tools are provided.
Duration: 4 hours
Maximum participants: 8
