The Wixárikas - MEXICO
The Wixárikas or Huichols constitute an ethnic group that lives in the mountainous region of the Sierra Madre Occidental, in the Mexican states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Durango. They are known for their rich and distinctive cultural tradition, which includes art, language, clothing, religious practices, and a unique worldview in which they emphasize the interconnection between spirituality, humans, animals, plants, and the natural environment.
Made up of about 60,000 indigenous people, their customs and way of life have not changed since the time of the Spanish conquest. When the Spanish arrived in Mexico, the Huichol people fled to the mountains, which were difficult to access, to preserve their autonomy, and this independence allowed them to forge a culture with traditions and a very particular aesthetic.
