“Catarina Riccabona is an award-winning textile artist based in London. She hand-weaves one-of-a-kind wall hangings and throws from carefully selected yarns. Each piece is highly individual. This distinct identity is created by an intuitive way of working, allowing the design to form spontaneously during the weaving process. Each piece is also characterised by the slight irregularities typical of making by hand.
After studying Textile Design at Central Saint Martins, London, she specialised in hand-weaving. Winning the Clothworkers' Award in 2012 she set up her studio practice at Cockpit Deptford.
From the beginning Catarina followed a sustainable philosophy in her making which is reflected in the choice of yarns - often undyed and unbleached natural yarns such as linen, hemp, wool and alpaca. Colour comes in the form of re-used, recycled and plant-dyed yarns. For her wall hangings she uses paper and raffia yarns which are naturally biodegradable. She also collects warp remnants (usually considered waste) and re-integrates those into her works - this requires joining lengths of threads by knots and results in a particular aesthetic that further emphasises the hand-made character and has become a signature feature in many of her works.”
"I am very proud and grateful to have been invited by De La Espada to showcase my work with them at Xtant. I loved collaborating with De La Espada Atelier on their 'Arts & Crafts cabinets' last year. I really admire De La Espada's sophisticated and highly considered designs and sensitivity towards natural materials."
