Daniel Olatunji - UK

Developed by Daniel Olatunji, Monad is an artisanal menswear line inspired by the craftspeople that work alongside him, to bring together contemporary design, innovation and traditional craft. At the center of his philosophy is a desire to preserve traditional textile-making and to champion circular practices in garment design – preserving value whilst avoiding destruction and waste. Monad draws from the ingenuity of the makers that they collaborate with and the relationship they have with the natural world. With a particular respect for hand-crafting and pre-industrial techniques, Monad’s process is influenced by natural cycles and slow production; it doesn’t necessarily align to the industry calendar. Monad is working to create a community of artisans across the world. Olatunji has collaborated with artisanal weavers and indigo dyers in his native Nigeria, loom weavers in London, his home, as well as hand weavers in Ireland and Latvia. The brand also works to reinterpret textiles that have been discarded - vintage, deadstock and surplus fabrics. Through weave, fabric and finish Monad finds beauty in deformities and celebrates imperfections. Olatunji’s design ethos centers around the deconstruction of familiar silhouettes - of vintage tailoring, workwear or military fatigues. His inimitable curiosity for craft, investing time and meticulous care to each and every piece, give Monad garments singularity. MONAD (from Greek; monad “unit”) an elementary individual substance that reflects the order of the world.
