Satish Kumar - INDIA
Satish Kumar is an Indian British activist and editor. He has been a Jain monk, nuclear disarmament advocate, pacifist, and is Editor Emeritus of Resurgence & Ecologist magazine. Now living in England, Kumar is founder of the Schumacher College international centre for ecological studies. His most notable accomplishment is the completion, together with a companion, E. P. Menon, of a peace walk of over 8,000 miles in 1962–64, from New Delhi to Moscow, Paris, London and Washington, D.C., the capitals of the world's earliest nuclear-armed countries. He insists that reverence for nature should be at the heart of every political and social debate.
The Schumacher College in Totnes, United Kingdom, is unique. The founders were inspired by E.F. Schumacher, the economist, environmentalist, and development educator and the author of Small Is Beautiful. Schumacher College runs holistic education courses for people concerned with issues around ecology and sustainability, in which "students are encouraged to develop a deep, participatory relationship with nature". In partnership with the University of Plymouth, Schumacher College offers an MSc Holistic Science, MA Ecological Design Thinking and MA Regenerative Economics. The College also runs a programme of one, two and three-week short courses throughout the year.
